LUCKY FOR SOME
"The
number 13 is'nt all bad...It
always seems to get a bad press and is in need of some good PR! The
number 13 fills many of us with
fear - who enjoys working on Friday
the 13th? (Or any other day, for
that matter!) This silly superstition has even got its own name - triskaidekaphobia!
And it's not just us paranoid Brits, either - 13
gets a bad press wherever it goes. It's even removed from hotels and
street addresses all around the world.
It could have something to do with Judas being the 13th
disciple at the Last Supper,
or there being 13 Full
Moons a year,
the time when witches venture out! But the bad-mouthing's relatively
recent. Earlier societies sang the number's praises.
So it's time to hear it for 13.
Here's why it's a remarkable number...
Extra day!
On average, the moon covers 13
degrees per day. Although there are 12 months in a year,
based on the movements of the sun, there are 13
moons a year - one every 28 days, plus a day left over:
Hence the expression 'a year and a day'.
When the 13th Full Moon
occurs -two in one month - it's called a 'blue moon' (cue for a song?).
Many ancient cultures used a calendar based on these 13 lunar
cycles. The first civilisation known to man (around 3000BC), was an
advanced society of people known as the Sumerians, who possessed extraordinary
Astronomical knowledge (even better than Patrick Moore). They lived
in Mesopotamia, an ancient land located where Iran and
Iraq are today. They followed a solar-
lunar calendar alternating between 12 and 13
months. Handy if you want
an extra holiday!
Calendar girl
The first calendar that the North American Indians used was on the shell
of the turtle (hopefully when the poor beast wasn't still in it!). The
outer shape is circular, to symbolise a 'sacred hoop'. And within the
shell are 13 segments,
used to mark the passing of each Full Moon.
These 13
moon cycles gave birth to the legends of the 13
Original Clan Mothers (that's girl power!),
who represented the talents and abilities that we all can develop during
our lives - if we try! Traditionally, 13
was considered a powerful number with strong connections to women
and fertility, as the female menstrual cycle follows
the phases of the moon. We bleed
approximately 13 times per year,
roughly every 28 days (and don't we know it!)
Freya - the Norse goddess of love and fertility - was associated
with the number 13 because
of this, and she's specifically linked to Friday
the 13th. Back then, it was a
sacred day, but for us, it's just an excuse to tell your boss you're
ill...
Even the origin of our existence is related to the number 13.
One sperm (13 chromosomes) + one ovum (13
chromosomes) = a human life. Blimey - science, eh?
Number crunch
That brainy Greek philosopher Pythagoras said, 'The
world is built upon the power of numbers,' and believed they possessed
individual qualities. He created the system of divination - known now
as numerology - where all words, names and numbers are reduced to single
digits.
Using this system, the number 13
is the higher vibration of 4 (as 1 + 3 = 4), 4 being
the root of all numbers associated with the Earth and the four
elements.
Also, 13 symbolises love for hte
world and is associated with genius. People born on this date are said
to be innovators and explorers, successful in scientific research.
Sexy boffin types.
Word up
The Gematria is an ancient Hebrew
system for discovering the hidden meanings behind
words, using
numerical values for letters of the alphabet (a bit like an ancient
Morse code, then!). It was used to search for the secret holy names
of God, which were believed to carry incredible power.
The Greeks used Gematria to interpret dreams. Kabbalists - those studying
Jewish mysticism - developed the system further. Thirteen is considered
to be directly connected to God. It means 'love
of unity';
as the Hebrew words for 'love'
and 'one'
both total 13.
Wow, that number certainly packs a powerful punch!
Cool gang
Unlike today, where only a brave sportsman will wear the number 13
on his shirt, many, many moons ago, anything consisting of 13
was considered very lucky!
Jesus had 12
disciples, and he said his group represented 'the13
veins of humanity'.
There were 13 knights of
the Round Table, including King Arthur. (If it was an oblong
table, some might have felt a bit left out!)
Robin Hood had12 merry men to help him rob the rich!
Romulus, / Page 61/ god
Osiris.
There are 12 Namshans (advisors) around the spiritual leader
of Tibet, the Dalai
Lama.
A witches' coven tradi-tionally had 13 mem-bers.
The number 13 is said by
some to be ded-icated to the Virgin Mary,
as she's believed to have died on 13 August.
In Judaism, there are 13 examples
of God's divine mercy.
Maimonides - the 12th-century Jewish physician, rabbi
and philosopher - had 13 principles
of faith that he considered the minimum requirements of Jewish
belief. The Hebrew bible has 39 books, which is 3
x 13. (That's enough maths for now!)
In Indian temples, there are 13
Buddhas. There are said to be 13
stages a man must pass through to achieve Buddhahood.
(Ha, that's a tough task
- most of them don't progress past infancy!)
In the Tibetan faith, 13
is the most favourable number of them all. It represents the
Goddess Penden Lhamo -
who's protector that's a
tough task - most of them don't progress past infancy!) In the Tibetan
faith, 13 is the most favourable
number of them
all. It represents the Goddess Penden Lhamo - who's protector of the
Dalai Llama and the Tibetan nation.
Convinced yet?
Double power
The ancient Aztec and Mayan,
people of South America thought. the number 13
was so powerful, they used two calendars - one based on 365 days and
another on cycles of 13. (They certainly
liked making life complicated for themselves!) It was thought to be
the most astronomically precise calendar ever created and is still used
for magical purposes by some remote Mayan
tribes.
The Mayans believed the entire span
of time would last for 13 Baktun cycles
(one Baktun = 144,000
days). The cycle of time we're in now is said to have begun
on 13 August 3114 BC, and is
to end on 22 December 2012. So,
don't forget to put that date in your diary, girls.
The Aztec calendar also had a week consisting of 13
days, which was ruled by
Tlazolteotl - she was associated with witchcraft
and purification of sin. She was the
power behind all forms of bad behaviour, and her special weapon was
sex.
(Must have been fun having her as your goddess!)
The 13th day was dedicated to Tezcatlipoca,
the Aztec god of the night and material things (we're with him on that!)
He carried a magic mirror which gave off smoke and killed enemies. Maybe
that's why he was known as the Smoking Mirror...
Praise be!
Various faiths in years gone by made 13
a part of their religious ceremonies. In ancient Babylon,
13 people were chosen to represent the
gods. For the Egyptians,
13 was associated with immortality, as
they believed there were 12 rungs on the ladder to eternal life and
knowledge. To take that all- important 13th
step represented the transition through death into beyond.
Those canny Druids had a few things up
their sleeve, too. The ancient Celtic Oghamalphabet,
used by them as a secret language and when worshipping, was also known
as the 'sacred tree alphabet' and was based
on 13 trees native to Britain.
New zodiac
We all know our star sign, but did you know there have been 13
zodiac signs? The
sun appears to pass through 13 constellations
on the ecliptic (the path it takes through the stars).
The missing constellation, which lies between Libra
and Sagittarius, is called Ophiuchus
- the Serpent Bearer: He's associated with Aesclepius,
the Greek God of healing, whose symbol
(snakes coiled around a staff or rod -ooer!), is used to represent places
of healing and medicine.
The Greek philosopher Plato insisted it
be included in the zodiac, but his cries for the case of Ophiuchus
were ignored. This has divided astronomers and astrologers for thousands
of years.
So, all you autumn girls, you may have an extra star sign!

"The Devil's Number?
Many features of Bible numerics are calculated by adding the numerical
values of individual words together. This is possible because the letters
of the Greek alphabet had a numerical meaning as well as being used
in writing words. For example. the Greek word for "dragon"
is "drakon:' and we can add its numeric value as follows:
D |
4 |
R |
100 |
A |
1 |
K |
20 |
O |
800 |
N |
50 |
7 |
975 |
975 = 13 x 75.
Thus we see that this numeric value is
a multiple of 13.
but let us examine some other names by which the Bible refers to the
devil:

There are innumerable instances where the
num-ber 13 is woven into the Bible
pattern. Here is another remarkable instance:
In Genesis 10 the names
of Canaan and his, descendants are given. They have
a numeric value, of 3.211. or 13
x 13 x 19. In
the 13th genera-tion from Shem
were two brothers, Peleg and Joktan.
and We are told that the later rebelled. The numeric value of Joktan
is 169, or 13 x 13.
He had 13 sons, and the numeric
value of their names total 2.756. or 13
x 212, The verses recording
their history have a numeric value of 13 x
13 x 63."

"Sometime after the Second World War,
there was a con-test between an American with an electric desk calculator
and a Japanese using an abacus like this. The abacus
won / Page / 68 / 'Then it must have been a poor desk machine, or an
incom-petent operator.'
'They used the best in the U.S. Army. But let's stop argu-ing. Give
me a test - say a couple of three-figure numbers to multiply.'
'Oh - 856 times 437"
Pickett's fingers danced over the beads, sliding them up and down the
wires with lightning speed. There were twelve wires in all, so that
the abacus could handle numbers up to 999,999,999,999
- or could be divided into separate sections
where several independent calculations could be carried out simultaneously.
'374072,' said Pickett, after an incredibly brief interval
of time. 'Now see how long you take to do it, with pencil and paper.'
There was a much longer delay before Martens, who like most mathematicians
was poor at arithmetic, called out '375072'. A hasty
check soon confirmed that Martens had taken at least three times as
long as Pickett to arrive at the wrong answer.
The atronomer's face was a study in mingled chagrin, astonishment, and
curiosity.
'Where did you learn that trick?' he asked. 'I thought those things
could only add and subtract.'
'Well - multiplication's only repeated addition, isn't it?
All I did was to add 856 seven times in the unit column, three times
in the tens column, and four times in the hundreds column.
You do the same thing when you use pencil and paper. Of course, there
are some short cuts, but if you think I'm fast, you should have seen
my granduncle. He used to work in a Yokohama bank, and you couldn't
see his fingers..."

The first alphabet
The Phoenicians, who once lived where Syria, Jordan and Lebanon are
today, had an alphabet of 29 letters as early as 1,700 BC. It was adopted
by the Greeks and the Romans. Through the Romans, who went on to conquer
most of Europe, it became the alphabet of Western countries.
Sounds strange
One tribe of Mexican Indians hold entire conversations just by whistling.
The different pitches provide meaning.
The Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone was found by Napoleon in the sands of Egypt.
It dates to about 196 BC.
On it is an inscription in hieroglyphics and a translation in Greek.
, Because scholars knew ancient Greek, they could work out what the
Egyptian hieroglyphics meant. From this they learned the language of
the ancient Egyptians.
Did You Know Many Chinese cannot
understand each other. They have different ways of speaking (called
dialects) in different
parts of the country. But today in schools allover China, the children
are being taught one dialect (Mandarin), so that one day all Chinese
will understand each other.
Translating computers
Computers can be used to help people of different nationalities, who
do not know each others' language, talk to each other. By giving a computer
a message in one language it will translate it into another specified
language.
Worldwide
language
English is spoken either as a first or second language in at least 45
countries. This is more than any other language. It is the language
of international business and scientific conferences and is used by
airtraffic controllers worldwide. In all, about one third of the world
speaks it.
Page 83
Earliest writing Chinese writing has been
found on pottery, and even on a tortoise shell, going back 6,000 years.
Pictures made the basis for their writing, each picture showing an object
or idea. Probably the earliest form of writing came from the Middle
East, where Iraq and Iran are now. This region was then ruled by the
Sumerians.
The most words
English has more words in it than any
other language. There are about1 million in all, a third
of which are technical terms. Most
people only use about 1 per cent of the words available, that is, about
10,000. William Shakespeare is reputed to have made most use of the
English vocabulary.
A scientific word describirig a process
in the human cell is 207,000 letters long. This makes this single word
equal in length to a short novel or about 80 typed sheets of A4 paper.
Many tongues
A Frenchman, named Georges Henri Schmidt, is fluent (meaning he reads
and writes well) in 31 different languages.
International
language
Esperanto was invented in the 1880s by a Pole, Dr Zamenhof. It was hoped
that it would become the international language of Europe. It took words
from many European countries and has a very easy grammar that can be
learned in an hour or two.
The same language
The languages of India and Europe may
originally come from just one source. Many words in
different languages sound similar. For example, the word for King in
Latin is Rex, in Indian, Raj, in Italian Re, in French Roi and
in Spanish Rey. The original language has been named Indo-European.
Basque, spoken in the French and Spanish Pyrenees, is an exception.
It seems to have a different source which is still unknown.
Number of alphabets
There are 65 alphabets in use in the world today. Here are some of them:

The Literary Cannon: 153
Fishes in the Net
"Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great
fishes, an hundred and
fifty and three:
(John 21. 11).
Why there should have been exactly 153
fishes in the net
is a question which has puzzled commentators from the earliest times.
Obviously the number
had an esoteric significance, and by reference to the sacred canon
of number and geometry
this may be discovered
The parables and many of the episodes in the New Testsment
form the literary expressions of geometrical processes. This is particularly
clear in the case of the 153 fishes
The account in the twenty-first
and last chapter of St John's gospel of the miraculous draught of
153 fishes provides
an exellent illustration of the canon of numerology, rediscovered
by the early Christian scholars and adopted for literary purposes
in the composition of their sacred writings.
ON WHICH SIDE SHALL I CAST THE NET THEN
?
CAST IT ON THE RIGHT SIDE
WHICH SIDE IS THAT
?
CAST THE NET
OVER
THAT
SIDE
THAT
DIES THE DEATH
THE
INSIDE OUT OF THE OUTSIDE IN SIDE
WHERE
THE UPSIDE DOWN OF THE DOWN SIDE UP IS SEEN AS
IN A MIRROR SPARKLY
WHERE
RIGHT IS TO LEFT AND LEFT IS TO RIGHT
AND THE RIGHT SIDE IS THAT SIDE OF THE HERE AND
NOW THAT IS ALWAYS THE RIGHT SIDE

it is made up of nine, the most adjustable

they always add up to nine"

"BY WRITING THE 26 LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET
IN A CERTAIN ORDER ONE MAY PUT DOWN ALMOST ANY MESSAGE (THIS
BOOK IS WRITTEN WITH THE SAME LETTERS AS THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA AND WINNIE
THE POOH, ONLY THE ORDER OF THE LETTERS DIFFERS). IN THE SAME WAY
NATURE IS ABLE TO CONVEY WITH HER LANGUAGE HOW A CELL AND A WHOLE
ORGANISM IS TO BE CONSTRUCTED AND HOW IT IS TO FUNCTION. NATURE HAS
SUCCEEDED BETTER THAN WE HUMANS;FOR THE GENETIC CODE THERE IS ONLY
ONE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE WHICH IS THE SAME IN A MAN, A BEAN PLANT AND
A BACTERIUM. "THE DNA MESSAGE IN A HUMAN CELL COMPRISES ABOUT

"By
a strange shuffle of fate, Magic and Mystery in Tibet turned out to
be
our thirteenth book. I find it
interesting, but not meaningful, that the numbers 7, 11, and 13
recur quite frequently in my life. Claude Kendall, for example, had
13 letters in his name, as did
Tiffany Thayer. Our office was at 70 Fifth Avenue,
at the comer of 13th
Street. Our room number was 706, which added up to
13,
and was of course on the seventh floor."

"As more information emerges about the developed
astronomy of the Olmec, the
same deduction must be made as has been made concerning Egypt.
A developed astronomy requires a lengthy period of observation. One
expert, Dr M. Popeno-Hatch, estimates from the internal evidence of
their astronomical records that the Olmec
must have been on the scene at least as early as 2000BC.1
Their actual appearance may have been far earlier still.
Their calendar begins in the year 3113
BC, about the same time King
Menes was engaged in unifying Upper
and Lower Egypt.

"Ancient Egypt also preserved complex beliefs concerning
the cyclic creation and destruction of worlds. The little known Edfu
Building Texts,8 for example, speak of a remote golden
age, many thousands of years in the past, when the gods themselves
lived on an island the 'Homeland of the Primeval Ones'. This island,
the texts tell us, was utterly destroyed in a terrible storm / Page
184 / and flood caused by a great serpent'.9 The majority of the 'divine
inhabitants' were drowned10 but the survivors of the cataclysm settled
in Egypt where they became known as 'the Builder Gods, who fashioned
in the primeval time the Lords of Light . . .'11 According to the
Edfu texts, it was these survivors who set out the foundations of
all the future pyramids and temples of Egypt and who handed down the
religion that would much later be practised throughout the land under
the semi-divine rule of the Pharaohs."

"C. It feels strange to hear the name Allah.
Why don't you say God if you speak
English?
M, Yes, indeed, the name Allah
seems to be strange to non-Muslims
but this name has been used by all the Prophets since Adam until Muhammad{PDUH}.
It is a contraction of the two Arabic
words Al-Ilah,
i.e . The God.
By dropping the letter "I" you
will find the word Allah. According
to its position in an Arabic sentence it
can have the form Allaha
which is close to the Hebrew

THE SEARCH FOR DIRECT

Page 162
"An astonishing idea, which-transferred, to the realm of technology-would
look something like this. In New York or a monster computer would
be fed with all the known data on physics. Whenever and from wherever
the computer was interrogated, it would give its answer in fractions
of a second. Another computer might be in Zurich with the whole of
medical knowledge stored inside it. One in Moscow would be stuffed
with all the facts about biology, another in Cairo would have no gaps
in its astronomical knowledge. In short all the knowledge in the world,
arranged by branches, would be stored in various centres in the world.
Connected by radio, thr. computer in Cairo, if asked for medical information,
would pass on the questions to the computer in Zurich in the hundredth
of a secona. Edgar Cayce's brain must have functioned in much the
same way as this perfectly credible and already technically feasible
computer link-up.
I now put forward the bold speculation: what if all '(or even only
a few highly trained) human brains have unknown forms of energy at
their disposal and possess the ability to make contact with all living
beings? We know frighteningly little about the functions and potentialities
of the human brain; but it is known that only one tenth of the cortex
functions in the brain of a healthy man. What are the remaining nine-tenths
doing? The fact that men have recovered from incurable diseases by
will power and nothing else is well-known and scientifically' documented.
Perhaps a 'gear' unknown to us has been engaged and set an additional
tenth or two-tenths of the cortex working? If we assume the fantastic
idea that the strongest forms of energy operate in the brain, then
a strong mental impulse would be noticeable everywhere simultaneously.
If science succeeds in making such a 'wild' idea demonstrable, 'it
could mean that all intelligences in
the universe belong to the same unknown structure.
Page 163
Let me give an example. If a strong electrical impulse is released
at any point in a tank full of millions of bacteria, it is felt everywhere
and by every species of bacteria. The surge of current is perceived
everywhere at the same moment. I quite realise that this comparison
is imperfect, for electricity is a known form of energy and dependent
on the speed of light. I am concerned with a
form of energy that is available and effective everywhere simultaneously.
I imagine simply an as yet unidentified form of energy which will
one day make the incomprehensible comprehensible.
In order to give a semblance of probability to the extraordinary idea,
I shall quote the report of an experiment carried out on 29 and 3°
May, 1965. In its scope and nature, it must be unique. On these two
days 1,008 people concentrated
at the same time, indeed at the same second, on pictures, sentences
and groups of symbols, which ~ere 'radiated' into the universe by
them with concentrated power. The fact of this, mass experiment Js
not the only astonishing thing, the results are strange, too. None
of the participants knew any of the others; they lived hundreds of
miles apart. Yet 2.7 per cent of the participants answered on ready
printed forms that they had seen a picture, nam~ly the model of an
atom. Since collusion on the part of the 'guinea-pigs' was impossible,
it is surprising that as many as 2.7 per cent should have seen the
same 'mental picture'. Telepathy? Hocus pocus? Chance? Admittedly,
the whole thing is a science-fiction subject, but ,the experiment,
organised by scientists, did take place. It is quite obvious that
we don't know everything yet. The result of an experiment by a group
of physicists at Princeton University is equally inexplicable. While
investigating tile disintegration of electrically neutral K mesons,
they reached a result that was theoretically impossible because it
contradicted a long established principle of nuclear physics.
Page 164
One more extraordinary example. One part of the relativity theory
says that mass and energy
are only different forms of one and the same phenomenon. (E=mc'.)
Put simply, mass can
literally be produced from the void. Supposing a strong beam of energy
is shot past a heavy atomic nucleus, then the beam of energy disappears
into the strong electrical field of energy of the, atomic nucleus
and an electron and a positron appear in its place. Energy in the
form of a beam has changed into the mass of two electrons. To the
mind that has not been trained scientifically the process seems crazy
and yet it takes place exactly like that. There is nothing to be ashamed
of if you cannot follow Einstein; one scientist called him the great
solitary because he could only discuss his theory with a dozen or
so of his contemporaries.
After this excursion into the still unexplored fields of thought transference
and the functions of the human brain, let us turn back to our theme
again."

"In the year 999,
in the tenth day of the Fifth Moon, at the Imperial Palace of Kyoto,
a cat gave birth for the first time recorded here, and to five little
kittens. The emperor so marvelled at this that he charged his ministers
with the care of them; they were to bring the kittens up exactly the
same way as they had been nursed as children. When the kittens were
grown, he made it known at Court that he wished the breeding to continue."

HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF THE FORBIDDEN
CITY
"In the heart of Beijing,
the Imperial Palace remained the residence of the emperors for nearly
five hundred years, from the 15th century to the early 20th century,
and was the actual and symbolic seat of imperial power. Popularly
known as the Forbidden City, it was built in the Ming Dynasty between
the 4th and the 18th years of the Yongle period (1406 - 1420 AD).
Many of the buildings of the Palace have been repaired and rebuilt,
but their basic form and layout remain in their original state.
This magnificent, palatial architectural complex covers
an area of over 2,350,000 square feet and contains 9,999
rooms. The largest complex of its kind in the world, it is
surrounded by ten-foot-high walls that are crowned by four observation
towers and flanked by a deep moat. The walls are pierced by four large
gates, each with three openings and a broad crowning pavilion."

the most adjustable and yet essentially unchanging number. However
one chooses to add up multiples of nine,
for example 54,
72, 108, they always add up to nine"

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS
Graham Hancock
1995
Page 458
"This was Egypt,
the real organic Egypt
of today and yesterday, which overlapped (but spread out far beyond)
the strange' official' Egypt of
the map described, a rectangular fiction exactly
seven terrestrial degrees in length."
"Whoever they may have been, it was obvious that
the original planners and architects of the Giza necropolis had belonged
to a civilization which knew the earth to be a sphere, knew its dimensions
/ Page 459 / almost as well as we do ourselves, and had divided it
into 360 degrees, just as we do today.
The proof of this lay in the creation of a symbolic
official 'country' exactly seven
terrestrial degrees in length, and in the admirably geodetic
location and orientation to the cardinal points of the Great
Pyramid."

HALL OF THE GODS
Nigel Appleby

The Book of the Dead and the Hall of Records
" In John 6: 51, Jesus describes himself as 'that living bread
which has come down from heaven'. As I explained earlier, tne Egyptian
hieroglyph for bread is identical in shape to the King's Chamber seal
boss (see figure 66).
We have already noted previously that the Grand
Gallery is 153 feet in length.
The number 153 has a
.long Christian tradition associated with the notion of enlightened
souls,'primarily drawn from the symbolism of 153
fish as outlined towards the end of John's Gospel.
Here the disciples are told to cast their nets to the right, which
they promptly do - and so catch the said 153
fish. The King's Chamber flooi'ls exactly 153
courses of masonry below the summit platform. Years after reading
about the connections of 153 within the Great Pyramid, and biblical
passages that outlined the'humber in relation to "fishing and
the specific term of casting the nets to the right, I was not surprised
to read almost identical symbolism within the Egyptian
Book of the Dead.
Pyramid rituals
'lihe basic concept behind the ancient Egyptian initiate trying to
get from this world into the next focused upon passing through 4 frontiers
of the sky. This required the departed spirit to convince the guardians
to grant a free passage, only granted by knowing secret words and
names, which, when repeated, 'were guaranteed to ward off any aggressor
or evil apparition. As a consequence, any person daring to venture
into the underworld would require magical skills of the very highest
order. In ferrying oneself across the 4 frontiers of the sky the services
of a ferryman were essential, and'the initiate needed to know the
correct answers to the ferryman's questions in order to use his boat,
'which was of course a celestial boat. The knowledge required involved
knowing mythology, the
/ gods' names, and the magic of Egypt, as well as possessing mathematical
and practical scientific skills. I see in these rituals a memory that
"the hitherto unknown pre-dynastic priests, from whom the Egyptians
obtained their knowledge, were scientists, technologists and perhaps
even metaphysicists."

C. If all three religions, Judaism,
Christianity and Islam, are
claiming to emanate from one and the same
creator, why do they differ?
All
Prophets from Adam to
Muhammad [PBUH] were sent with the same
message: that is, the total submission of mankind to Allah.
This submission in Arabic
is called Islam; Islam means
also Peace, peace between the
Creator and His creatures."

THE MAN WHO LOVED ONLY
NUMBERS
Paul Hoffman

Page 217
"Mathematicians in India in the sixth century had
developed a place value system and introduced the concept of a zero
to keep their symbols in their proper places. Thus a 1
with an 0 after
it, or 10, is a very different
number from a 1 alone.
Erdos, who always joked that he was old and stupid, said the Indians
were very clever, not just in their discovery of zero,
but in their choice of similar- sounding Hindi words for stupid person
(buddhu) and old person
(buddha).
In the seventh century, Hindu scholars introduced Islam
to the Indian number scene,
and the ideas of zero
/ Page 216 ( omitted) and place value spread rapidly throughout
the Arabic world. Six centuries later, Fibonacci
was so impressed with the ease of the Hindu-Arabic
numerals that he wanted to make Pisan merchants aware of them. In 1202,
he wrote Liber abaci (Book of the Abacus), which, despite the
title had little to do with the Abacus and a lot to do with liberating
computations from the yoke of Roman numerals.
The book seems quaint from the vantage point of the twentieth century,
because it explains what we take for granted.
"The nine
Indian figures are: 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 , and with the
sign Zero. . . any number can be written."
